Analysis of "The Silence of the Lambs" directed by Jonathan Demme

The opening starts off with a establishing shot of some trees in a forest. Looking at the picture you can see that the trees have lost most of its leaves which suggest that it is winter. As the camera focuses more you can see some sort of fog behind the trees. This shows that something threatening is going to happen. Also this type of setting makes the viewer feel cold and isolated mainly because of the types of colours used in the background. It seems that this film has a complex storyline. Showing the shots of each scene quickly allows the audience to get a feel of the movie and how the forthcoming events happen. As the camera changes between shots it creates a backdrop. This shows the use of continuity. The credits suddenly show up as a standstill over the wintery background. The font used is bold and plain so viewers can see it easily. This also shows that the film is sad. As each seen follows onto the next the writing slowly fades away into the shot. At 1:08 you can see a person appearing in the distance and makes her way up towards the camera. From the sound you can hear that she is tired which resembles that she might be running away from something or someone. It builds a tense atmosphere and helps create a mystery for the audience. Furthermore by using fast paced camera shots, dark lighting, dark colours and a cold atmosphere, builds the tension and shows that the genre is horror. The camera then focuses in so we get a close-up of the characters facial expression which looks like she’s tired. Here you can see her top is wet in some areas which show she is sweating. This immediately creates an up beating mood as the audience feels tense.

In addition a wide shot is taken on the girl running through the forest. This allows the viewer to see the atmosphere around the women. Soon after, a point of view shot is taken which provides a perspective from a particular characters point of view. Then a tracking shot is taken of the character. This adds a sense of anxiety as she is running quite fast and she seems scared. This is also built from the non-diegetic sound. Slowly the camera goes more closely to the character which then revels more about her to the viewer. During this the camera takes a 90 degree turn. There is then an over the shoulder shot of another character. We do not see his face right away which creates suspense and gives a feeling of mystery. The camera then moves closer in the two characters talking this may be so the audience can feel as if they are in the characters position. After the girl runs of we have a close-up of the man’s facial expression. There is then a medium/close-up which reveals four name plates saying 'hurt, agony, pain and love. These may be the themes that are represented in the film. These words chosen are very strong. They may describe how the storyline flows and how the movie finishes of.  The camera suddenly moves on changing to an extreme close up. The camera focuses on the windows of the building before going to the next shot. This is so the viewers know where the women is.
The camera eventually changes to a medium shot as you see the women walk down a congested staircase

The music played in the opening sequence is extremely slow and calm. This immediately sets the viewer to focus on the movie. Compared to the images on the screen, the music goes very well as it conveys the type of genre the film is. It also sets the atmosphere remarkably well. The slow pace music build vast amount of tension to the viewer as it is played in moments where the woman is shown running.
Overall the opening sequence has created mood and atmosphere to the rest of the film. It has done this by the pace of the music and the different types of shots used. It has built each frame to show isolation of the character and also the feelings shown by the protagonist.
