Using Propps's and Todorov's theories on Casino Royal

Propp’s theory
The hero- is the main protagonist, who is at the centre of the story usually on a quest, a search or a mission. In this film the hero is James bond as he has been sent by MI6 to complete a mission.

The helper- provides guidance and support to the hero. The helper in this is the women Judi Dench as she navigates James bond and tells him what to do.

The princess- often the heroes reward or prize at the end of the story. The main princess in this film is Solange as James and her go out.

The princess’s father- rewards the hero. The princess does not have a father in the film.

The dispatcher- sends the hero off on his/her task or quest. The dispatcher is Judi Dench as she gives orders to James Bond to where he has to go and what he has to do.

The villain- competes with and tries to destroy the hero. The main villain is Le Chiffre as he tries to kill the protagonist but does not succeed.

The donor- provides a magic ingredient to move the story on.  I think the donor in this film is Alex Dimitrios as he joins with the villain. His role in the film makes the film more interesting as he is also a villain. He helps Le by getting important information about James.

Todorov's Theory
Equilibrium- A normal detective from MI6 is set on a mission to catch someone.

Disruption- the villain tries to kill people from MI6.

Recognition- the person who works for the villain wants money as he wants to invest in a poker game

Attempt to repair disruption- the main character is set out on a mission to find the villains and kill them.

A return or restoration of new equilibrium- the villain is tracked down and persecuted.

Applying Propp’s Theory to Psyche:

The hero- is the main protagonist, who is at the centre of the story usually on a quest, a search or a mission. - Our opening doesn’t consist of a hero as there isn’t anything like a killing or murder. The character however is planning one
The helper- provides guidance and support to the hero. – There isn’t a helper in our sequence

The princess- often the heroes reward or prize at the end of the story. – There isn’t a princess in our opening sequence

The princess’s father- rewards the hero. - There isn’t a princess in our opening sequence

The dispatcher- sends the hero off on his/her task or quest. -  There isn’t a dispatcher

The villain- competes with and tries to destroy the hero. – The villain is psyche is the character that is seen doing all the “unordinary” things. He is planning to kill someone

The donor- provides a magic ingredient to move the story on. – The donor is mainly the main character as he basically moves the story on with his dangerous behaviour

Applying Todorov’s Theory to psyche:
Equilibrium: none

Disruption: this is when the character began to do unordinary things like mixing and pouring chemicals, and using sharp objects

Recognition of Disruption: none

Attempt to repair the disruption: there wasn’t an attempt to repair the disruption, as there was only one character involved.

A return of new equilibrium: the person who was preparing things will eventually get caught. He had killed 5 women already and on the 6th one, he gets found out by the police.
