Analysis Of DVD Covers

I have chosen to analyse seven as one of my film posters. When looking at the DVD cover the first impression you get is that this film includes action and scary scenes. This is done by the colours used. As you can see the colours are very dark and dull which immediately sets a tense mood. The cover as a whole gives a scratchy affect as everything isn’t very clear it seems that it has been sketched out. This shows that this film is based on a physiological thriller. The font also contributes to this sketchy aspect as it is not as clear. In most film covers the text is bold so you can see it properly. This seems to be faded away in the background colours. Furthermore the lighting used creates a very upbeat vision. The light focuses on the side of the face of the two main characters. This highlights there authority within the film. It also creates a sense of mystery as each of the seven names is crossed out by a red line which may mean that a person is planning something. The characters are big so the audience knows who the main characters are and what purpose they have. Note that on the side there is some sort of writing/symbols which may foreshadow the killing later on in the film. This may be linked to the seven names crossed out as they may be the target. The title “seven” stands out to show that this is the main title of the film. This is one of the key things a DVD covers needs.

I have chosen to analyse saw as my second film cover. When looking at the DVD cover you first get the impression of horror/action thriller. This is done by the colours and images used in the cover. This cover is not like most others, it is very plain and bland this immediately shows that this film has some true meaning to it. The main colours used are black and grey. Which are seen as very dull serious colours. Also the use of lighting on the image makes it more eye-catching and gives it more authority. This may show that the film may be about a man who doesn’t appreciate life and he is surrounded in some sort of box. The font used on the main title “saw” is very bright and bold signifying that this is the main title. Also the colour used is red which indicates they may be also of blood/ murders in the film. I think this cover is very good as although its plain and dull this thrives tension towards the viewer. it makes them want to see the film as they want to know what happens next.
